A teenage boy has been seriously injured after he was attacked by a shark while swimming at a northern NSW beach on Sunday.
Emergency services were called to Cabarita Beach, between Tweed Head and Byron Bay, around 3.50pm on Sunday following reports of a shark attack.
The boy sustained injuries to his right upper arm, wrist and right leg.
Surfers and two off duty paramedics rushed to the boys aid, applying a tourniquet to help restrict the bleeding.
He was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
The boy remains in a serious but stable condition.
NSW paramedic Ben Mumford praised the brave bystanders who jumped in to help the teenage boy.
We believe he was swimming at the time, he told Nine News.

There was a few brave people in the water that helped him out of the water and there was also a couple of off duty paramedics on the scene that assisted him until we arrived.
In a video shared to Instagram, a group of surfers can be seen carrying the boy up the beach following the shark attack.
The quick-thinking group used a surfboard as a stretcher to help carry the teenager to safety.
It is not yet known what type of shark attacked the boy, but NSW Shark Smart had tagged and released a tiger shark at Cabarita Beach at 1.23pm on Thursday.
Cabarita Beach will remain closed for the next 24 hours.
